The Struggle with Self Promotion: Why You Need a Promotion Strategist
When I ask creative people what their #1 dream is, they say, “I want to make a living from my art.”
Wouldn’t that be great?
When I was in art school, I longed for the day when I could make a living selling portraits. So I asked my advisor, “What can I expect to do once I leave school?”
He replied, “You can get a job as a teacher. Or you can go to grad school.”
Really?
“What if I want to sell my work? Where do I learn how to do that?”
His face wrinkled into a grimace as he said, “You’ll have to go to business school to learn that.”
Another professor told me, “You might have to work at Burger King for a while before you get discovered.” I thought, “Hell, I work there now.” So I left school and went into business – eager to learn the skills that would allow me to make my dream come true.
Do you hate promoting yourself? Does the mere idea of it fill you with dread? That’s okay, this is normal. What’s not okay is staying stuck. That’s where Frank McKinley comes in. He’ll teach that marketing doesn’t entirely suck and he’ll even teach you to love it. He’s that good. – Bryan Hutchinson, author of the iconic bestseller Writer’s Doubt: The #1 Enemy of Writing (and What to Do About It) and Founder of the Award-Winning Website Positive Writer
My first job after I left college was as a sales rep for Radio Shack. Soon after, I went into management at a men’s clothing store. 9 months later, I opened my own store selling children’s clothing.
When you have your own business, you have to do everything – and the most important job by far is selling. Here are some of the things I’ve done:
- Cold calling
- Face to face selling
- Selling at events
- Selling eBooks (over 26,000)
- Selling services and add-ons
I’ve been doing this for over 35 years – so you know I understand what you’re facing. I know your fears, your doubts, and your desire to give up. But even more than that, I’ve learned how to make the best of any situation I face. If there’s a silver lining in your cloud, I’ll help you find it.
If not, I’ll help you find a brighter sky.
Self Promotion: 3 Skills You Need to Succeed
The tagline on this website has 3 parts:
- Engage Readers
- Sell Your Ideas
- Build Your Tribe
I’ll teach you how to do it all.
First, I’ll help you create interesting, sharable content that people will rave about.
Second, I’ll introduce you to self-promotion techniques that are neither sleazy nor slimy. They’ll showcase the real you, not some gimmicky caricature.
Third, I’ll show you how to develop the relationships you need to build a network that supports you, buys your products, and opens the doors of opportunity for you.
You don’t have to do this alone.
As an extrovert, I know how to create rapport with people, forge lasting relationships with them, and bring out the best they have to offer. I’ve spent years studying human behavior, persuasion, and sales – and I’ve tested everything to see what works, and what doesn’t. I’m sure that together we can unleash the genius artist and engaging marketer inside you.
If you want to make a living as a writer, I’d definitely use Frank’s coaching and teaching resources because he seems to really know his stuff. – Greg Narayan, Founder at DearBlogger.org and the WordPress Experience
